Application for a working holiday visa
Nationals of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and Israel may travel to Germany without a visa and apply for the necessary residence permit there at the relevant immigration office. In this case, they may only take up employment once the residence permit has been granted. Alternatively, they may apply for the residence permit at any German diplomatic mission abroad, including the Embassy in Ljubljana.
Argentinian, Chilean, Uruguayan and Andorran nationals must apply for a Working Holiday Visa before entering Germany. The application can be submitted to any German diplomatic mission abroad that issues visas. In this case, too, it is therefore possible to apply at the Embassy in Ljubljana.
You must be aged between 18 and 30; Canadian nationals must be aged between 18 and 35. The visa can only be issued once, for a period of up to 12 months.
The following documents are usually required for the application, both the originals and a copy:
- A fully completed and signed application form
- Form ‘Additional details regarding contact and representation’
- The original passport, together with a copy of the personal details/photograph page and any pages of the passport containing German residence permits. The passport must have at least two blank pages remaining and should be valid for at least another year. The passport will not be retained by the Embassy whilst the application is being processed.
- A recent biometric photograph – please do not submit computer printouts of photographs
- A personalised and signed letter of motivation, which also contains specific details of your plans for your first few months in Germany
- A full CV
- Proof of accommodation for the first three months in Germany (e.g. tenancy agreement, hotel booking for the first three months, private letter of invitation with a copy of the inviting person’s passport and a current certificate of residence (not older than three months)). If a tenancy agreement is submitted, proof must be provided that sufficient financial resources are available to cover the rent for the first three months. If a hotel booking is submitted, proof must be provided that it has already been paid for. If such proof cannot be provided, proof of financial means for accommodation amounting to EUR 1,140 must be provided.
- A return flight ticket to the country of origin, with corresponding proof of payment. If no return flight ticket is provided, proof of additional financial means of at least EUR 1.000 must be provided (the exact amount may vary).

- Adequate insurance cover: proof of health insurance valid in Germany for the duration of the planned stay, which also covers hospital treatment and repatriation to the applicant’s country of origin
